Department Of Pharmaceutics

Pharmaceutics is a branch in Pharmaceutical sciences that deals with formulation of drug delivery systems, evaluation of those and development of robust manufacturing process. The department has been involved in teaching B.Pharm curriculum and imparting M.Pharm and Ph.D education.  The faculty has gained expertise in development of conventional and novel drug delivery systems for transdermal, ocular, and intranasal applications. The thrust areas of research involving Novel drug delivery and targeted drug delivery are as follows:

  • Transdermal drug delivery 
  • Ocular drug delivery
  • Self emulsifying drug delivery systems
  • Oral site-specific drug delivery
  • Multiparticulate drug delivery systems
  • Dry powder Inhalers
  • Intra nasal drug delivery

The department has been maintaining a state of art pilot-plant for solid oral dosage forms that houses a rotary tablet press, Table top Spray dryer and Kalweka main drive with interchangeable attachments for size reducing, mixing, granulating, pelletizing and coating. The research laboratories of the department are equipped with USP dissolution tester, USP flow dissolution apparatus, Environmental test chamber, Franz diffusion assembly rotary flash evaporators and UV spectrophotometers.     

The department promotes skill development in PG students by encouraging them to take up industrial projects with reputed Pharmaceutical Companies. The post graduate students of the department have successfully involved in more than 30 industry sponsored projects.  

The department has been involved in seeking extramural grants from various government funding agencies. The department has materialized grants exceeding 40 Lakhs from funding agencies such as AICTE New Delhi and VGST, Government of Karnataka.  The department is actively involved in offering industrial research and consultancy. The department has successfully completed more than 10 development and exploratory projects with reputed pharmaceutical industries including Syngene International Ltd., SPI Pharma, Nuwill Research and Innovations Pvt. Ltd., Stevia World Agrotech Pvt. Ltd., Kemwell BioPharma Pvt., Ltd., Phytotech Extracts Pvt. Ltd., Semler Research Center, Scinva Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd.

Advanced infrastructure:

The department has well equipped pilot plant with advanced instruments in the research laboratories such as:

  • Ultrasound probe sonicator: used in formulations of lipid and non-lipid based sub micro and nanosystems
  • HPLC: used for qualitative and quantitative estimations of compounds, used for estimation of drug levels in biological fluids and tissues
  • RIMEK tablet compression machine for compressing tablet
  • Table top freeze dryer with cyclone separators for producing microparticulate systems
  • USP flow through dissolution test apparatus for testing the dissolution of Novel Drug Delivery System
  • The department has experienced and highly qualified faculty who are actively collaborating with National and International Universities, Institutes and Pharmaceutical Companies. The department has received funds from various government and private organizations such as VGST, AICTE and IAS. The department works towards improving the skills of PG students by involving them in training and taking up projects from reputed private Pharmaceutical Companies. Students are exposed to workshops and   guest lectures delivered by eminent personalities during their course
